Don’t forget to Measure Your Window Before You Buy Your Blinds

by Maria Castronuevo

One of the more popular window coverings is blinds and they come in many different sizes as well as varying in texture and color.

The first thing you need to do before you even start shopping for the blinds you want is to measure your windows. This step is commonly omitted and this is a serious mistake, because you may very well end up with blinds that are too long or too wide, or with the problems in reverse. Measuring first will ensure that you end up with window coverings that fit like they were custom made for your home.

Having exact measurements is an important element to the way your blinds look and fit once they are installed. The dimensions that you need to take are across horizontally and down vertically. You may decide to add an inch or two on the vertical measurement to accommodate the space between the brackets at the top of the window.

Many people may hire professionals to measure and install their window coverings, but this is not necessary if you know how to use a tape measure accurately and install a couple of brackets. Some blinds may have horizontal slats while others have vertical slats, but this will not affect the measurements.

No matter which color and material you choose for your new blinds, measuring your windows before you purchase them will greatly improve the way they look and hang in your windows. You do not have to be a master carpenter to do this step, and almost every home in America has the needed tools, because it simply requires a measuring tape.

Measuring is the most important aspect of purchasing and installing blinds, and doing this before you bring home your purchase can save you some major headaches, as well as another trip to the store.

Finding and installing the right blind for your window is easy when you are prepared, in advance, with the correct measurements and by knowing if you need a thirty-six or sixty inch long length. Because blinds come in so many different widths, heights, shapes and styles it will help you to narrow down your search once you get to the store.

Millions of homes have incorporated blinds in their home dcor because they are so popular and are generally easy to keep clean. Any size and style that you can imagine is available for you to choose from and if you have a custom size window you can get a blind ordered. Some of the benefits to having blinds are privacy, keeping light out and are great decorating accessories. So, go and measure today for your new, colorful blinds.

American Made Candles – Soy Candles

by Nancy Rivers

Each night the national news is reporting on the various economic disasters that are occurring in the American economy. Fortunately, there is an incredibly easy way for us Americans to support our own economy and our own friends and neighbors. Soy candles are produced by companies based in the United States and sold by companies based in the United States. This makes the process of buying American made candles extremely easy!

Soy candles are made from the soybean plant – which is grown by the American farmer. Once the soybean is harvested in September, the beans are crushed separating the meat from the oil. The meat of the soybean is often referred to as soy meal and is further processed into various products for both animal and human food. The oil then goes through a partial hydrogenation process which transforms the oil into a soft wax. This wax is what candles are made of. It has been estimated that it would take 60 million pounds of soybeans each year to meet the demands of the annual consumption of candles.

The soybean wax is very soft so it works very well with containers. However, freestanding candles such as pillar candles and taper candles can not be made purely of soy wax because it is so soft. Any freestanding candle that is marketed as soy must have some other ingredient in it (paraffin wax is very common) so the candle will not become a complete blob of molten wax the first time it is burned. Another possible wax used to “firm” the soy wax is palm wax – a natural renewable resource. Other vegetable waxes, such as bayberry, candelilla, carnauba, castor, jojoba oil, ouricury wax (from the Brazillian Feather Palm) or rice bran may also be used to firm the soy wax to form the freestanding candles.

Soy wax candles are non-toxic so they are safe for humans as well as pets. Soy candles are extremely clean burning, producing at least 90-95% less soot than paraffin wax candles. The soot which is produced by burning a soy candle is black like it is with paraffin wax candles, but mostly a white color which may not be noticeable to the naked eye. There is very little black soot produced with a pure unscented soy candle. Adding fragrance and other additives to preserve color or to form freestanding candles can create more of the black soot. Soy candles also burn at a cooler temperature than paraffin wax candles which results in 20-30% longer burn time.

Scented soy candles hold a larger amount of fragrance than paraffin wax candles and can release the scent very easily. In fact, most of the time, a scented soy candle can fill the entire room with fragrance without being lit! Scented soy candles will carry the scent all the way through the candle and release it from the beginning to the end of the candle.

Let’s combat all of the bad American economic news by purchasing American made soy candles. Support the American farmer, wax manufacturer, and candle makers who are your friends and neighbors by buying the soy candle. In addition to being a healthy contribution to the American economy, soy wax candles are also a healthy, natural alternative to the paraffin wax candles.
