The cafes of Cuba have long been a destination for those who enjoy laid-back acoustic
music, the kick of a cortado (Cuba’s variation on espresso) or the refreshment of a mojito
spiked with Havana Club rum. Ernest Hemingway was a regular at Havana’s cafes, along with
many of Latin America’s most influential authors and poets.
Today’s Cuban cafes continue to be hang-outs for Cubans of all ages and backgrounds.
Intellectuals and artists sitting alongside young lovers are serenaded by the romantic
boleros and relaxed sones that emanate from small ensembles performing in the corners
of the room.As the night wears on and the rum begins to flow, the music picks up tempo
and discretion gives way to expression. Patrons push the tables and chairs aside for a night
